Clement Chia is co-founder of OFFSET (a motion graphic agency) and OFFEO (animated video maker platform). His animations are pretty viral on Instagram, Toner was lucky to reach and get a quick and smart interview.
Enjoy it!
Clement, where do you get your inspiration?
I normally get my inspiration from the internet. The things I see every day online are the things that challenges me to think how can things be done out of the box or differently. So I want my animation to allow people to feel differently from what they see online.
Which is the reletioship and influence beetween your cultural backgorund (country, studies, etc.) and your artworks?
I come from Singapore where there’s a great amount of different cultures in 1 one place. As the art scene in my country is definitely growing tremendously, it does have a huge impact on the things I do. Also I come from a Programming background in my studies, that’s why I always like to explore different technologies and how they can complement my designs.
What are you much focused in?
Currently, I run a motion graphics company OFFSET where we focus on big brands such as Facebook, Jaguar, Macdonald’s, F1, etc. And also I’m building an online platform OFFEO where users can create their own video easily. And in my free time, I’ll spend some time to find different styles of animation and to explore my design style further.
Have you encountered any difficulties when you first started your art/freelance career?
It was never easy at the start as I come from a programming background where I do not know anything about design. But thankfully, there are tons of tutorial out there to get you started. I started learning after effects at the start and got really interested in 3D as well. So that kind of kicked off my design career.
Over these years, what is the most important thing you have learnt from your profession?
You got to really love what you do. Passion is really crucial for a design career. There are going to be a lot of failure attempts in this line, the main lesson is to pick yourself up and try again till you achieve it.
Do you think that a creative job is just creativity or it’s discipline too?
To me, I guess its 70% Discipline and 30% Creative talent. Hard work/discipline is definitely the key for a good designer. Of course having a little of talent definitely helps, but we shouldn’t take that for granted.
Are you currently work on new projects?
Currently we are working with a lot of different Facebook projects. This is one of the main big project that we’ve been working on for the last year.
