Serge Hamad is a French/Algerian self taught visual artist born in Algiers and based in New York since 2001.

Temporal Perception” is Hamad latest limited series. Shot mainly in Venice Beach California: “each artwork when seen for the first time at a glimpse, seems to be an entity. The colors and geometric lines form a unit. It’s just when our brain starts to analyze our vision that we understand how we lost our childhood“. Following an interview with artist.

Serge, where do you get your inspiration?

I am mostly inspired by what seems banal at a glimpse.

Which is the relationship and influence between your cultural background (country, studies, etc.) and your artworks?

I was raised in two different cultures and lived in many different countries. I assume that’s why I consider my work as universal and so does the viewer

What are you much focused in?

Turning the banal to something attractive.

Have you encountered any difficulties when you first started your art/freelance career?

No. I was lucky I guess.

Over these years, what is the most important thing you have learnt from your profession?

To me the most important aspect is to constantly create different series while instinctively keeping my style. The “Je ne sais quoi” that makes collectors know/feel that a work was created by me is just as valuable as a signed Certificate of Authenticity.

Do you think that a creative job is just creativity or it’s discipline too?

I believe it’s a fifty-fifty combination. An artist who wants to live from his/her art needs to be fairly disciplined not only to create & finish the projects that came to mind but also to work on showing them.

Are you currently work on new projects?

I just had an exhibit at the Scope Art Fair New York. So I am taking a few days before I grab my camera for a new series.
